EA is keeping the specifics of the plans under wraps, but Ripple Effect is developing a new "experience" for the franchise while Lehto's team is looking to flesh out the storytelling in the Battlefield universe. Although details are scarce, Battlefield is undergoing drastic changes that will greatly expand the IP. The mode has been met with some praise despite Battlefield 2042's messy launch, but it seems like Ripple Effect has bigger ambitions. In 2021, the studio rebranded as Ripple Effect Studios when it announced it was making Battlefield 2042's Battlefield Portal mode, a hub for old-school Battlefield games in the 2042 engine. After shipping Modern Warfare 2, Zampella had a fallout with Activision and co-founded EA's other FPS studio, Respawn, which went on to make Titanfall and Apex Legends. Zampella has a long history in the FPS genre, dating back to the early Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games. EA has confirmed that DICE will no longer be the sole developer of Battlefield and multiple studios will help flesh out the universe with Zampella's oversight.
